Guwahati:

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said today that he has spoken to superstar Shah Rukh Khan and assured him about the protests for his upcoming film “Pathaan”. Mr Salma said Mr Khan called him early this morning about an “incident” at a theater in the state.

“Bollywood actor Shri @iamsrk called me and we had a conversation at 2am today. He expressed concern about the incidents that happened in Guwahati during the screening of his film. I assured him that maintaining law and order is State government’s duty. We will ask and make sure such unfortunate incidents do not happen,” the chief minister said in a tweet.

Asked by reporters about the violent protests by right-wing activists over the film, he tweeted for a day when he briefly dismissed who Mr. Khan was. “Who is Shah Rukh Khan? I don’t know anything about him or the movie ‘Pathaan’,” Mr Sarma said in Guwahati yesterday.

On being told that Mr Khan was a Bollywood superstar, he had said that people in the state should focus on Assamese films instead of Bollywood.

The remarks came in response to concerns that some activists were tearing up movie posters at Guwahati theaters where the film was due to be screened.

Mr Salma also said he had not received any calls from Mr Khan and would look into the matter if the actor urged him to. He also pledged to take action if any protesters broke the law.

Mr Khan’s “Pathaan” will be released on January 25, but the song “Besharam Rang” is facing protests because of his partner Deepika Padukone wearing a saffron bikini. Several leaders, including right-wing Vishwa Hindu Parishad, called for the film to be banned.
