Missing female cricketer, 26, found dead in Odisha forest

Rajashree Swain, a 26-year-old female cricketer from Odisha state, was found hanged from a tree in a dense forest in Cuttack district on Friday, police said.

She has been missing since 11 January.

Her scooter was found abandoned near the forest.

Deputy Police Commissioner Pinak Mishra said: “The matter has been registered as an unnatural death. We found her body hanging from a tree in Gurudijhatia forest in Athagarh district. We will investigate the cause of death from all angles.”

Mishra said Swain’s cause of death will become clear once the autopsy report arrives.

Cricketers from the Puri district are here for a training camp organized by the Odisha Cricket Association for the upcoming national championship in Pondicherry.

However, Swain failed to secure a spot on the 16-man team selected for the tournament.

Swain’s roommate said: “She was seen crying after the roster announcement on Wednesday night, and shortly after, she disappeared from the hotel where we were all training.”

Coach Pushpanjali Banerjee filed a disappearance complaint with the local Mangalabag police station in Cuttack city after Swain could not be reached by phone.

Her family allege Swain, a right-arm fast bowler and mid-level hitter, was murdered “because of bruises on her body and damage to her eye”.

They also claimed that Swain was denied the team despite his performance being better than many others who were drafted.

The association’s chief executive, Subrat Behera, said selection was conducted in a very transparent manner and expressed shock at the cricketer’s death.

“If there’s a bias, how will she find a spot on the 25-man possible team that’s going to training camp,” Behera added.
