India's latest move to track virus variant amid China's new Covid terror

India to increase genome sequencing of positive cases to track coronavirus variants

New Delhi:

Horror stories of COVID-19 leaking from China and new cases reported in the United States have prompted the center to prepare for any scenario. The Department of Health has sent letters to all states requesting increased genome sequencing of positive cases to track coronavirus variants through the INSACOG network.

“Given the sudden surge in cases in Japan, the United States of America, the Republic of Korea, Brazil and China, it is necessary to strengthen the Positive Case Genome Sequencing Health Minister Rajesh Bhushan said in a letter to all states.

“Such an exercise will enable timely detection of new variants circulating in the country, if any, and will facilitate necessary public health measures for this,” Mr Bhushan said.

The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) is a consortium of more than 50 laboratories monitoring the genomic variation of the COVID-19 virus. Genome sequencing is a technique used to identify and characterize new virus strains.

Samples from all positive cases should be sent daily to INSACOG genome sequencing laboratories corresponding to all states and federal territories, the center said.

Around 3.5 million Covid cases continue to be reported each week globally, the center said. India recorded 112 new Covid cases this morning; active cases fell to 3,490, according to the health ministry.

Crematoria across China are struggling to dispose of large numbers of bodies as the country grapples with a wave of COVID-19 cases that authorities say cannot be traced, according to AFP.

Cases have surged across China, with hospitals struggling and pharmacy shelves empty after the government abruptly decided to lift years of lockdowns, quarantines and mass testing.

The U.S. has warned that the outbreak is now causing concern in other parts of the world, given the potential for further mutations and the size of the Chinese economy.

In the Chinese capital, Beijing, local authorities reported only five deaths from the virus on Tuesday, up from two the previous day, AFP reported.

Beijing health officials said only those who died directly from respiratory failure caused by the virus would be counted in the Covid death statistics.

“Currently after being infected with the Omicron variant, the main cause of death is still the underlying disease.” Wang Guiqiang from Peking University First Hospital told reporters.

The U.S. State Department said the surge was now an international concern.“We know that for as long as the virus is circulating, it’s out in the wild and it has the potential to mutate and pose a threat to people around the world,” said State Department spokesman Ned Price. “Given the size of China’s GDP, the virus The resulting death toll worries the rest of the world [gross domestic product]given the size of the Chinese economy,” he added.
