House panel recommends criminal charges against Trump in Capitol riot case

A U.S. House of Representatives committee has recommended criminal charges against former President Donald Trump.

Washington:

A congressional committee investigating last year’s attack on the U.S. Capitol recommended criminal charges against former President Donald Trump on Monday.

The House panel unanimously urged the Justice Department to pursue Trump on charges of sedition, obstruction of official process, conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government and making false statements.

“The committee has seized significant evidence that President Trump intends to undermine our constitutionally mandated peaceful transfer of power,” Representative Jamie Raskin said outlining the panel’s findings.

“We believe that the evidence my colleagues described today, and that we have gathered throughout the hearing, justifies the criminal transfer of former President Donald J. Trump,” Ruskin said.

The committee’s recommendations to the Justice Department would culminate in Attorney General Merrick Garland’s appointment of a special counsel to investigate Trump’s role in the Capitol riots and the 2020 presidential election he won in ousting Democrat Joe Biden effort made.
