Rajnath Singh meets military chief over India-China border clash

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will chair a high-profile meeting on the issue today

New Delhi:

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will lead the center’s response today as it prepares for an opposition offensive in last week’s India-China border clash in Arunachal Pradesh .

New Delhi’s military and diplomatic leaders will meet today to discuss next steps after a Dec. 9 border clash became the latest flashpoint in tensions between New Delhi and Beijing.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will today meet the three service chiefs – Army Chief General Manoj Pande, Navy Chief Admiral Hari Kumar and Air Marshal VR Chaudhari.

Foreign Minister Dr Jaishankar Jaishankar and Defense Minister Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan (retired) will also attend the meeting. Foreign Ministers Vinay Kwatra and Giridhar Aramane will also be present.

In the near future, the defense minister will meet with the prime minister and other senior cabinet colleagues to fine-tune the political response to the opposition’s offensive on the issue. Mr Singh is due to address both houses of parliament this afternoon. Before that, several MPs from opposition parties sought discussions over the border clash.

The military said in a statement yesterday that the standoff on December 9 resulted in “several minor injuries on both sides” and that both sides “evacuated the area immediately”.

Shortly after the news broke, Congress lashed out at the centre, saying the government needed to boost the country’s confidence by discussing the issue in parliament. The Trinamool Congress has submitted a notice in the Rajya Sabha seeking discussion on the issue.

A government source said the center had “never hesitated to have any discussions and had the facts ready”.

Opposition MPs seeking to discuss the issue include Congress’s Manish Tewari and Syed Nasir Hussain, Aam Aadmi Party’s Raghav Chadha, Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Manoj Jha and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen’s Asaduddin Owaisi.
