3 coaching students allegedly commit suicide in Rajasthan’s Kota – Flying Journals

The students are aged 16, 17 and 18.

Three students who were preparing to sit their competitive exams in Kota, Rajasthan state allegedly committed suicide today. The boys are 16, 17 and 18 years old.

Two of the students, Ankush and Ujjwal, were friends from Bihar who lived in rooms next to each other. One is preparing for his engineering school admissions, while the other is studying to crack the medical school entrance exam. No suicide note has yet been found.

A third student, Pranav, came to Kota from Madhya Pradesh and was preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET – Pre-Medical Entrance Test.

Kota, the hub of private tutoring centers offering preparation courses for competitive engineering and medical exams, has seen a staggering number of suicide deaths in the past few years. The deaths underscore the intense pressure young men and women face to excel and qualify for India’s best universities.

Students, including many who prepare for these competitive exams in their last two years of school, often complain of too much pressure.

Coaching centers are notorious for pushing students over the edge with long class times, long assignments and very competitive internal tests that determine whether students are promoted or relegated in many “batches”. The top batches get the most sought-after teachers.

In response to widespread media attention in the past to teenage suicide and self-harm cases in Kota, the government has set up a suicide hotline where anxious students can seek counseling.

A student who called for all tutoring centers to be closed in 2016 jumped to her death despite having passed the coveted IIT-JEE exam.

In 2019, the Rajasthan government formed a state-level committee to prepare draft legislation to regulate coaching centers to ease the pressure on students studying in such institutions. There is no public information about the draft yet.
