AAP’s ‘kidnapped’ Gujarat candidate lashes out at own party – Flying Journals

Dramatic allegations by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that the BJP has kidnapped a Gujarat election candidate took a strange turn tonight as the “missing” leader lashed out at his own party in a video.

Hours after AAP claimed its Surat (eastern) candidate, Kanchan Jariwala, was “kidnapped” and forced at gunpoint to withdraw from next month’s Gujarat polls, he claimed he chose not to represent an “anti-ethnic” party” and “anti-Gujarat”.

“During my campaign, people used to ask me why I would be a candidate for an anti-national and anti-Gujarat party. I listened to my inner voice. I withdrew my nomination without any pressure. I cannot support such a Political parties,” Kanchan Jariwala said in the video.

The video surfaced shortly after AAP leaders met with the Election Commission to complain about the “kidnapping” and demand the cancellation of elections in Surat (east).

Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia said the MLA was kidnapped yesterday, dragged by 500 police officers to the election office and forced to withdraw his nomination at gunpoint before being taken to an “undisclosed location”.

He said Mr Jariwala and his family could not be reached and his house was also locked.

“He’s under pressure to withdraw his nomination. He’s been forced to sit at the polls and he’s been pressured by the police. I want to tell the Election Commission that this is an open threat to democracy,” Mr Sisodia said.

He filed the charges with the Election Commission, tweeting: “A candidate was kidnapped. They made him withdraw his nomination at gunpoint. Could there be a more urgent matter for the Election Commission ?”

Another AAP leader, Raghav Chaddha, released a video in which he said Mr Jariwala was “dragged” by the police and the BJP and forced to withdraw his nomination.

“Look at how the police and BJP thugs are working together – dragging our Surat East candidate Kanchan Jariwala to the RO office to force him to withdraw his nomination. The term ‘free and fair elections’ has become a joke!” he tweeted.

Mr Sisodia said the BJP, fearful of losing in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat, resorted to kidnapping AAP candidates.

“It’s dangerous. It’s a kidnapping of democracy, not just of candidates,” he claimed.

Several AAP leaders tweeted about the allegations.

“Our candidate from Surat (East), Kanchan Jariwala and his family have been missing since yesterday. First, the BJP tried to get his nomination rejected. But his nomination was accepted. Later, he was forced to Withdrawing the nomination. Has he been kidnapped??” Arvind Kejriwal tweeted.

The BJP, which has been in power for 27 years in Gujarat, faces an aggressive campaign by the AAP, which has turned the traditional BJP-Congress rivalry in the state into a triangular one.

Gujarat voted for a new government from December 1-5. Results will be announced on December 8.

AAP accuses party of ties to BJP bribery ticket scandal Before the Delhi referendum.

Three men, including a relative and a personal assistant of AAP MLA Akhilesh Pati Tripathi, were arrested yesterday for allegedly taking Rs 100,000 from a party worker who wanted to be a referendum candidate. Another AAP MLA, Rajesh Gupta, has also been named and Delhi Police claim to have audio and video evidence.

The BJP said the case “revealed the true face of the AAP once again”.
