Gunathilaka accused of repeatedly choking Sydney woman during alleged sexual assault: report – Flying Journals

Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka nearly suffocated the woman during an alleged attempted rape, according to media reports citing police documents. The woman claims she was sexually assaulted four times at her home in Sydney’s Rose Bay on November 2 after dating an international cricketer who was part of the Sri Lankan team for the ongoing T20 World Cup. Gunasiraka, 31, was later arrested by Sydney police at his team hotel, despite the rest of the Sri Lankan team returning home after their Super 12 exit.

The left-handed hitter was refused bail on Monday and faces up to 14 years in prison.

In her complaint, the woman claims Gunathilaka tried to strangle her three times during the sexual assault.

“The complainant tried to grab the defendant’s wrist to remove his hand, but the defendant squeezed even tighter around her neck,” Australian media reported, citing police documents.

“The complainant feared for his life and could not get rid of the accused.

“She kept trying to stay away from the accused, which is a clear indication of her disagreement.” The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Jan. 12.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) took the incident strongly and suspended Gunathilaka from all forms of competition.

The Sri Lankan government is ashamed of the incident and has asked the SLC to investigate the matter immediately.

Gunathilaka played against Namibia in the first round of Sri Lanka and was eliminated.

He was later ruled out due to injury but stayed with the team after qualifying for the Super 12 stage.

Having represented Sri Lanka in eight Tests, 47 ODIs and 46 T20 internationals, Gunathilaka is no stranger to controversy.

He has been banned from the SLC for a year in 2021 after violating the team’s biosecurity bubble on the Tour of England with teammates Kusal Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella.

The SLC also handed him a six-month ban in 2018 after he broke the team’s curfew. That same year, Gunaselaka was also suspended after his unnamed friend was accused of raping a Norwegian woman.

In 2017, the board suspended Gunathilaka for six games after learning he had missed training sessions and played without cricket gear.
