Delhi Earthquake: Tremors lasting nearly 10 seconds have been reported in Delhi-NCR.

New Delhi:

A powerful earthquake struck northern India in the early hours of Wednesday morning after a 6.3-magnitude quake struck the Himalayan region near Pittolagarh in the Nepalese border state of Uttarakhand.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said the epicentre of the quake was located in Nepal, about 90km east-southeast of Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand state, at 1.57am on Wednesday.

Tremors were felt in Delhi and surrounding areas of Ghaziabad and Gurugram, and even Lucknow, waking people from their slumbers.

Uttarakhand and the Himalayas bordering Nepal have been experiencing small earthquakes for the past few days.

Federal Minister Meenakashi Lekhi tweeted: “Don’t want to tweet, but it’s safe to say that it feels like an earthquake!” Congress leader Radhika Hera urged people to “keep the Be vigilant and stay safe”.

Radio Jockey Raunac said: “It’s scary…very scary.” The USGS said the epicenter of the quake was 21 kilometers from Dipayar, Nepal.

The region experienced at least two earthquakes of magnitude 4.9 and 3.5 on Tuesday night, NCS data showed.

A 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand on Sunday, with its epicenter 17 kilometers east-southeast of Uttarakhand.
