Twitter laid off about half its employees on Friday after Elon Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, and the company is now contacting dozens of employees who lost their jobs and asking them to return to work, Bloomberg reported Sunday. .

Some who were asked to return were wrongfully fired. Others were fired before management realized their work and experience might be necessary to build new features envisioned by Elon Musk, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.

Twitter recently fired 50% of its staff, including those on its trust and safety team, Yoel Roth, the company’s head of safety and integrity, said in a tweet earlier this week.

Employees at the social media company tweeted that teams responsible for communications, content curation, human rights and machine learning ethics were destroyed, as well as some product and engineering teams.

Twitter on Saturday updated its app in the Apple App Store to start charging $8 for the popular blue check verification mark, Elon Musk’s first major overhaul of the social media platform.

Twitter did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
