At least 151 people were killed and more than 100 injured in a stampede at a famous market in the South Korean capital, Seoul, where huge crowds gathered for Halloween festivities.

  1. The crowd surge and squeeze occurred in central Seoul, where local reports said as many as 100,000 people, mostly in their teens and 20s, went to celebrate Halloween, blocking the area’s narrow alleys and winding streets .

  2. President Yoon Se-yeol declared national mourning on Sunday, saying the government would pay for the medical bills of the wounded and the funeral of the deceased.

  3. The president said the government “will thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident and make fundamental improvements to ensure that the same accident does not occur in the future”.
