A 23-year-old man set his bike on fire in Delhi’s posh Khan Market area and started throwing stones at police as they tried to catch him. He was eventually subdued and taken into custody after dramatic scenes that drew large crowds. He was later arrested.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, sparked panic in an area of the luxury market with popular restaurants and showrooms for several well-known brands.
According to police sources, Nadeem, 23, had come to the market the day before to collect food from a restaurant there. As he waited to receive the package, a couple passed by. The woman accused him of staring at her and complained at the police post there.
While no written complaint was recorded, a police officer on duty slapped Nadeem in the face. Sources said he was disturbed by this and came back the next day and set his two-wheeler on fire.
After the fire broke out, police and fire trucks rushed to the scene. The flames from the two-wheeler had spread to a nearby furniture store before being brought under control.
Police arrived at the scene and found the accused Nadeem, a resident of Hauz Rani, who was acting aggressively under the influence of alcohol. He was later subdued, news agency PTI quoted police as saying.
Nadeem works for a bicycle taxi aggregator and logistics service provider in India.
Video recorded at the scene showed the burning bike as Nadim threw rocks at police to avoid being caught. A separate clip shows the man after his arrest. He could be heard shouting abuse as police took him away.
Large groups of people were seen at the scene and there were also barricades on the ground, suggesting the chaos caused by the drama.
