The bus was carrying about 100 people


A bus carrying them collided with a truck on a highway in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, killing at least 15 people and injuring 40 others.

Late last night, the bus carrying about 100 people collided with a stationary truck near Suhagi Pahari in Rewa on its way to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

The truck was stranded on the highway due to an accident, officials said. The bus then hit the truck from behind.

Officials said the wounded were taken to a hospital in Suhaj and the seriously injured were being treated at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Rewa.

Rewa Superintendent Navneet Bhasin said most of the people on the bus were labourers from Uttar Pradesh who boarded the bus from Katni in Madhya Pradesh.

The workers came to Cartney on separate buses from Hyderabad, officials said, adding that they were preparing to go home for Diwali.

Some passersby have alerted police to the accident, sources said.

Police said a case has been opened and an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan expressed his distress over the accident. He also spoke with his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath.

Officials said arrangements were being made to deliver the bodies to their families in Uttar Pradesh.
