Supreme Court refuses to lift firecracker ban – Flying Journals

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court refused to lift Delhi’s ban on firecrackers ahead of the October 24 festival, citing pollution and saying there are other ways to celebrate Diwali.

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari filed an injunction against the AAP government in the court on October 10, but the court refused to pass any new order, saying the court had also made a clear order.

Mr Tiwari’s lawyer, Shashank Shekar Jha, referred to a request for an emergency hearing today during the lunch break, but the court again denied the request, saying “spending money on sweets…to give people clean air.” Technically , the court compared the BJP MP’s petition with a number of other petitions already pending.

On Thursday, the Delhi High Court also declined to hear a request to challenge the ban until January 1, noting that a similar petition is pending in the Supreme Court.

“Even if it’s green firecrackers, how can we set off firecrackers? Have you seen pollution in Delhi?” the Supreme Court told petitioner Manoj Tiwari on October 10, according to news reports.

Some segments of Hindu society – especially some right-wing groups – see the ban as discrimination against traditional practices.

Delhi BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga attacked Delhi’s AAP government, which also banned cookies. “If Hindus burn firecrackers on Diwali, there will be pollution, Arvind Kejriwal will send them to jail, but if firecrackers are burnt in the joy of being a priest [in Delhi], oxygen will be released from it! ‘ he said in a tweet and shared a video of some of Raj Kumar Anand’s supporters celebrating his becoming a minister.

PM Narendra Modi has been a supporter of pollution-free biscuits and is planning to attend the “Digital Firecracker Showcase” event at Ayodhya, UP, ahead of Diwali next week.

Manoj Tiwari’s plea challenges the Delhi government’s order to completely ban the sale, purchase and use of firecrackers during festivals for Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and others.
