Any direct conflict between NATO forces and Russian troops will lead to...: Putin warns

Earlier, Vladimir Putin had warned that he would use nuclear weapons to defend Russian territory

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that any direct contact or direct conflict between NATO forces and Russian forces would lead to a “global catastrophe”.

“In any case, direct contact, direct conflict between (NATO) troops and Russian troops is a very dangerous move that could lead to a global catastrophe,” Putin said at a news conference in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. “I hope those who say this is very dangerous. Smart, would not take such a step.”

Earlier, Putin had warned that he would use nuclear weapons to defend Russian territory after annexing four regions of Ukraine last month, a move the United Nations condemned this week.

On Tuesday, the G7 nations warned that the use of nuclear weapons against Ukraine would have serious consequences, according to a White House statement.

“We regret Russia’s deliberate escalator measures, including partial mobilization of reservists and irresponsible nuclear rhetoric, which are jeopardizing the Global peace and security. At risk. We reiterate that any use of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons by Russia will have serious consequences.”

Earlier, US President Joe Biden spoke of a nuclear “doomsday” in a speech on Thursday, warning of an escalation of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Biden warned of an “attack” on U.S. institutions at the New York home of James Murdoch, son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch, and spoke of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s use of nuclear weapons threaten.

“We haven’t faced the prospect of the end of the world since the Kennedy and Cuban missile crises,” Biden said in New York City.

During a fundraiser for the Democratic Senate campaign committee, Biden said Putin “is not joking when he talks about using tactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons.” That’s because, Biden said, “his military — you might say — is significantly underperforming,”

“I want to figure out, what is Putin’s exit?” Biden said. “Where did he find his way out? Where did he find himself not only disgraced, but also losing significant power within Russia?”

According to a joint report, Biden told attendees at the event, “I don’t think there’s anything that can easily use a tactical nuclear weapon other than the end of the world.”

Putin reiterated his nuclear threat, announcing the annexation of Ukrainian territory, some of which is not under Russian control, and enlisting 300,000 reservists to bolster his debilitating invasion.
