The half-decomposed body of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur student was recovered from his dorm room on campus today. Police suspect Faizan Ahmed, a 23-year-old student, committed suicide.
According to IIT Kharagpur authorities, the student from Tinsukia, Assam, recently moved into a dormitory.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Salma tweeted his condolences today: “Deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Faizan Ahmed, a bright young student of Tinsukia who was studying at the prestigious IIT Kharagpur. My condolences Condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace.”

Ahmed is a third year student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur. His family has been informed of his death.
Multiple suicide deaths have rocked the campuses of India’s premier science and technology colleges in recent months. Last month, two IIT students were found dead on two different campuses.
On September 15, an undergraduate student was found dead in a suspected suicide at IIT Madras in Chennai. The student, who is studying aerospace engineering, is in the fourth year of the program. No suicide note was found.
Another student of IIT Guwahati was found dead in his dorm room on September 17, in another suspected suicide. According to police sources, the student was identified as Surya Narayan Premkishore from Kerala. He studied at the School of Design.
In September, IIT campuses in Hyderabad and Kanpur reported two suicides in two days.
In July, a 22-year-old engineer was found dead inside the hockey rink in IIT Madras. Preliminary investigations revealed that he died by suicide. Police said he was working as a project engineer at IIT Madras and left a note saying he was unable to cope with the job.
