Tamil-language actor Nayanthara and her director husband Vignesh Shivan have announced they have become parents of twin boys who will be scanned by the Tamil Nadu health department. Asked by reporters about a possible breach of surrogacy rules, the state health minister said they would review the matter.
The couple married this June after dating for about five years. Nayanthara has been working on Jawan of Atlee with Shah Rukh Khan, and there is speculation that the couple used a surrogate mother.
“According to the norms, people under the age of 21 and 36 can donate oocytes (eggs or eggs). We think this can be done … will require the Director of Health Services to check that compliance with the norms,” the state health secretary MA Subramanian said.
“Nayan and I have become Amma and Appa. We are lucky to have twin baby boys,” Vignesh tweeted, showing the happy couple kissing the newborn’s feet.
“All our prayers, blessings of our ancestors and all good performances, have come in 2gethr in the form of 2 blessed babies need all your blessings for our Uyir and Ulagam. Life looks brighter and more beautiful God is double Great,” read the title, which makes no mention of surrogacy or adoption.
In the post, he also revealed the names of their newborns – Uyir and Ulagam, which means life and world.
Surrogacy has been a talking point since actor Shah Rukh Khan announced the birth of his youngest child, Abram. According to media reports, the actor and his wife Gauri Khan’s third child, Abram, was born through surrogacy in May 2013.
In March 2017, filmmaker Karan Johar announced that he was fathering twins – a boy and a girl – through surrogacy.
“This was an emotional but thoughtful decision I made after considering all my responsibilities and obligations as a parent,” Mr Johar said.
The state government introduced stricter guidelines following a controversy over forced egg donation by minors in June.
The surrogacy law was revised in January to ensure it would not be exploited commercially. Doctors say Nayantara and her husband may have been pregnant before the law was changed.
