Uninterrupted rain in Delhi, more showers possible today: 10 points

Rain fell for most of the day and night in Delhi on Saturday, bringing down late summer temperatures and flooding some of the city’s roads. The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting more rain on Sunday.

Here’s a 10-point cheat sheet for the story

  1. The rain caused traffic jams in several busy areas of Delhi. The Bureau of Meteorology says more rain is likely on Sunday.

  2. Authorities have asked motorists to watch out for standing water in low-lying areas, such as under flyovers.

  3. Traffic disruptions are possible even on Sunday morning due to rain, which is unlikely to stop at night.

  4. The maximum temperature on Saturday was 23.4 degrees Celsius. The minimum is 20.8 degrees Celsius.

  5. Air quality in Delhi improved due to rainfall. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, at around 7pm on Saturday was 37, in the “good” category.

  6. Delhi’s main weather station, Safdarjung Observatory, recorded 30.1mm of rain in the nine hours ending at 5:30pm.

  7. Rainfall below 15mm is considered ‘light’, ‘moderate’ between 15mm and 64.5mm, ‘heavy’ between 64.5mm and 115.5mm and between 115.6mm and 204.4mm “Very heavy” between. Rainfall in excess of 204.4mm is considered “extraordinary”.

  8. Some of the flooded areas are Anand Vihar, Wazirabad, a section of road between INA Market and AIIMS, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Tughlakabad, Sangam Vihar, Kirari, Rohtak Road, Vikas Marg, near Zakhira, Najafgarh, Mahipalpur and Rangpuri.

  9. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said there will not be much rain from Monday.

  10. A two-day “orange alert” has been issued for Uttarakhand, northwestern Uttar Pradesh, northeastern Uttar Pradesh and eastern Rajasthan, news agency ANI reported.
