According to the news agency myanmar now, officials informed that an ATR-72 carrying 63 passengers was hit at an altitude of more than 3,000 feet. The man on board was injured on the right side of the face.
Authorities identified the man as a 27-year-old who had travelled from Naypitaw to Loikaw. He was taken to hospital immediately upon landing.
Authorities said the bullet penetrated the plane before hitting the passengers. The Myanmar Military Council accused two resistance forces – the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP) and the People’s Defence Forces – of firing on the plane. However, the KNPP reportedly said their group was not involved in the alleged shooting and avoided civilian targets.
At the same time, according to myanmar now, bookings for flights to Loikaw have been cancelled until further notice. The Myanmar military has also reportedly deployed troops near the airport and has been searching the area.
