Shashi Tharoor first officially declared while running for Congress President

New Delhi:

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor today collected forms to run for the party chairmanship, making him the first leader to officially run for office. A key member of the G23 or Group of 23 Leaders in Congress, Mr Tharoor is the first to announce his intention to run for a position that has served in the Gandhi family (Sonia Gandhi or her son Rahul) for over 20 years people. .

Mr Tharoor, who has been cleared to contest the October 17 general election, faces a tougher challenge from Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, a staunch Gandhi family loyalist, who has been given the backs of those who fought to maintain the status quo and Rahul Gandhi. The support of the returning people is in the top post. Mr Tharoor’s colleagues from Madhya Pradesh, Kamal Nath and Manish Tiwari are also reportedly interested.

It would be the first time in more than two decades that no Gandhi was the default choice for president.

Rahul Gandhi, who currently leads the party’s “Bharat Jodo” Yatra, has steadfastly rejected calls from party members, including Mr Gallot, for him to return to the presidency – which he resigned after his 2019 election defeat .

Sonia Gandhi – who served as Congress president for 19 years before handing the charges to Mr Gandhi – has served as interim Congress president ever since.

The election comes against the backdrop of the withdrawal of some key leaders over the past few years. Last to leave was senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, whose exit was followed by most leaders of the party’s Jammu and Kashmir forces.

The last non-Gandhi Congress president was Sitharam Kesari, whom Sonia Gandhi took over in March 1998 – about two years later, the Narasimha Rao government was rejected.
