Sachin Pilot spent the day with Rahul Gandhi yesterday.

New Delhi:
Rahul Gandhi made it clear today that Ashok Gallot, who is about to run for Congress president, cannot keep two positions if he wins. His rival Sachin Pilot may replace him as Rajasthan chief minister, sources said.

Here are 10 points about the big story:

  1. The Sachin pilot, who has been waiting since Congress won state elections in 2018, was blessed by Gandhi to take over as Rajasthan chief minister, sources said.

  2. Mr Gehlot did everything in his power to stop Mr Pilot, firing him as his deputy after a 2020 rebellion nearly overthrew the government. But after Rahul Gandhi backed the “one person, one post” rule today, he had no choice.

  3. Rahul Gandhi told reporters in Kerala: “We have made commitments in Udaipur and I hope the commitments will be maintained,” Rahul Gandhi told reporters in Kerala, “A man , the one post” rule and whether it applies to Ashok Gallot.

  4. After being seen as a public rebuke, Ashok Gehlot said he was ready to join the queue.

  5. The 71-year-old is the Gandhis’ choice for Congress president but he has held out so far, worrying that if elected, he will need to step down as Rajasthan Chief Minister.

  6. Mr Pilot spent the day with Rahul Gandhi yesterday walking with him on “Bharat Jodo Yatra” in Kerala and flew out this morning, hours before Mr Gehlot’s arrival.

  7. Mr Gallot said he would try “one last time” to persuade Rahul Gandhi to return to the presidency of Congress before submitting his papers on Monday for the October 17 election. But Mr Gandhi told reporters he stood by his decision not to return to the post he resigned in 2019.

  8. Last night, Mr Gallot met interim chief Sonia Gandhi to press on his case. “One person can remain a minister and also be elected Congress president. I will do anything that benefits the party, one post, two posts or three posts, I won’t back down,” he said before the meeting.

  9. After meeting with Sonia Gandhi, senior leader KC Venugopal said on the “one man one position” rule: “It will depend on who competes and wins.” But Rahul Gandhi’s stern message cannot be disputed.

  10. Asked what he would say to the next party leader, Mr Gandhi said: “My advice is that whoever becomes the president of Congress should remember that he represents a set of ideas, a belief system and a vision for India .”
