New Delhi:

Hyderabad celebrates today, depending on one’s political persuasion, the state “integrates” into the Indian Union or “liberates” from Nizam rule. While Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao or KCR is celebrating “Telangana National Integration Day”, Federal Home Minister Amit Shah is celebrating the same historical event a few kilometers away, but with a slightly different name: “Hyderabad Liberation Day”.

The day Hyderabad merged with the Indian Union in 1948 witnessed what the militant KCR called the BJP’s “divisive agenda”. The BJP’s political ambitions are not lost on anyone: With a weakened Congress unable to challenge Telangana Rashtra Samithi, the BJP sees a slim chance in Telangana.

Disagreements between centres and state governments have become more common in recent months, but today’s events are significant. As Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao hoisted the national flag at the public garden, Nam Pali celebrated “Telangana National Integration Day” in Secunderabad, 7 km from him, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also unfolded the flag marking “Hyderabad Liberation Day”.

The KCR turned down an invitation to the Amit Shah event today, asking why the BJP did not celebrate the integration of Junagadh in Gujarat with India on November 9 and just “wanted to focus on Hyderabad”.

The BJP’s attempt to outdo the KCR is evident as they have combined the TRS’s three-day festival with a year-long celebration of the fusion of Hyderabad, which is juxtaposed with the central government’s ongoing “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”.

This radical rivalry politics is playing out today as the two leaders speak at separate public rallies and celebrate independence.

KCR’s three-day Telangana National Integration Day celebrations began yesterday with student, women and youth groups rallying at the constituency headquarters and today he unfurled the flag on the central lawn of the South Pali Public Garden. At the same time, ministers also unfurled national flags and saluted the district headquarters.

There will also be a rally to showcase Girijan and Adivasi artifacts, culminating in a public meeting. Tomorrow, cultural events will be organized to facilitate freedom fighters and artists.

On the other hand, Amit Shah’s one-day visit for “Hyderabad Liberation Day” included the presentation of flowers to Sardar Vallabhai Patel, an Indian The first Home Minister to unfold the flag after Hyderabad joined India.

Chief ministers of Maharashtra and Karnataka joined Amit Shah. Both states include parts ceded from the former state of Hyderabad. Another important aspect that the two states have in common is that they are administered by the BJP.

There was also a cultural programme after Mr Shah unfurled the flag at the parade ground in Secunderabad. In addition, at 2pm, Mr. Shah will distribute “Free De Young Celebrate Narendra Modi’s birthday at Classic Gardens in Secunderabad.

This is not the first time the BJP has weaponized Hyderabad Liberation Day against TRS. For years, they have accused KCR’s political party of not celebrating the day, claiming that it engages in “vote bank politics”.
