Video: 'Jimmy Jimmy' and 'Disco Dancers' at SCO summit in Uzbekistan

Viral video shows a woman singing Bollywood songs at a party in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

New Delhi:

Bollywood disco songs “Jimmy Jimmy” and “I am a disco dancer” were played at a party for delegates at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) regional summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan last Friday one of the songs.

A widely circulated video shows three singers (led by a woman) in formal suits singing some lines from two songs by the late Bappi Lahiri for the 1982 film Disco. The Dancer, the film that made its lead actor, Mitong Chakraborty, an overnight success.

With representatives from different countries dancing to it – some even singing along – the moment eventually became a tribute to Bappi Lahiri, who passed away earlier this year, and to Mithun Chakraborty’s stardom.

After two Hindi songs heavily inspired by English songs, the singer switched to another language and the video was interrupted. It was not immediately clear which leaders or representatives were present.

Some social media users said the video showed how Hindi movies and songs traveled across the region, and even around the world. “The former Soviet country is a big fan of Mithun Chakraborty and Raj Kapoor. I went to Armenia in July; my guide knows both countries very well, and the ‘disco dancer’ song,” Rahul Anand tweeted Special said.

“These songs are famous in all Central Asian countries and Russia,” said another Twitter user DP Mishra.

On the serious side, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the summit.

“Your Excellency, I know that today is not a time of war,” Prime Minister Modi told Vladimir Putin in his first face-to-face meeting since Moscow’s army invaded Ukraine.

Prime Minister Modi’s comments came a day after President Vladimir Putin acknowledged that China – Russia’s main ally – has “concerns” about the conflict in Ukraine.
