8 of 11 Goa Congress MLAs join ruling BJP, Jibe at ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in Rahul Gandhi – Flying Journals

Parliamentary MLA with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today.

Panaji:

Just two months after Congress appeared to have delayed the defect bid, eight of the 11 MLAs led by Supreme Leaders Dighambar Kamath and Michael Lobo joined the ruling BJP, reducing the opposition to There are only three members. Mass defections in Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra (United March for India) are so embarrassing to Congress that the BJP has been mocking:”Pure Land (Unity) Your party comes first. “

“This is Congress Choro (withdrew from Congress), BJP Xiaojing Island,” quipped Michael Lobo when the MLA announced their switch.

With the eight MLAs disengaged as a group – two-thirds of the party’s strength – they can avoid being disqualified under anti-defection laws.

A congressional ally, Goa’s Avant-garde party chairman Vijai Sardesai reacted dismissively, calling the defecting MLA a “symbol of pure evil” pursuing “greed for wealth and thirst for power” … ignoring Almighty God”.

Digambar Kamat and Michael Lobo were also at the center of speculation about the switch in July, with Congress even asking the speaker to disqualify them under the anti-defection law. The party has removed Michael Lobo as opposition leader but has not named a replacement.

This morning, the MLA meeting with the Speaker sparked speculation as the General Assembly did not meet. National People’s Party chairman Sadanand Shet Thanawad then told news agency PTI that they would join the party.

In July, former chief minister Mr Kamath said he was “shocked and appalled” by the allegations of leading a department. Even Michael Lobo, who served in the BJP before joining Congress ahead of elections earlier this year, claimed there was “no talk of any divisiveness”.

Goa Congress disperses in similar fashion in 2019 Loyalty oath in front of Rahul Gandhi. Apparently this doesn’t work for at least eight of them.

Although Congress managed to retain at least seven MLAs in July, the defections were not unexpected. With the exception of Mr. Lobo and Mr. Kamat, the other four did not make final moves, including Kedar Naik and Mr. Lobo’s wife, Delilah Lobo.

Senior leader Mukul Wasnik, who has been tasked with the crisis by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, appears to have prevented it. Or not quite, according to what happened today.

In Goa’s parliament, the BJP has a 25-member majority in the 40-member House of Representatives – 20 from its own MLAs, two from the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak party, and three independents. It will now be increased to 33. There are 3 left in Congress and 1 from the Goa Progressive Party. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has two priorities and the Revolutionary Goans Party has one.
