A 58-year-old self-styled priest was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of raping an underage woman, a Mumbai police official said.
Versova police station officials said the victim’s family contacted Suresh Kumar Ravindra Narayan Awasthi after being told by some acquaintances of his “divine” powers.
He said: “Since 2019 (when she was a minor), he raped the victim several times under the pretext of ritual, clicked on offensive photos of her and threatened to upload them on the internet, continuing sexually assault her.”
The family reached out to police after she recently told her parents about her distress. He says.
Awasthi, an information technology professional, was arrested on Sunday for rape and other offences under the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the official said.
